KIRKLAND – Northwest broke out of a six-game slide and ended a 15-game losing streak to Southern Oregon Friday, 84-67.
Â
Sam Van Loo scored 30 points, mostly with jump shots near the free-throw line, and hauled in nine rebounds to lead the Eagles.
Â
"What a great win for the Lady Eagles tonight," said NU Head Coach
Ken Crawford. "From start to finish, we were focused, worked hard, and got the job done. Tomorrow night is a new challenge, and we're looking forward to it."
Â
Syd'Nee Fryer recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 boards for the Raiders.
Â
Southern Oregon led for much of the first quarter, but Northwest unassumingly took the lead for good with a Lexi Biggerstaff basket 14 seconds into the second quarter. The Eagles never led by more than four in the second period and took a 35-31 lead into the intermission.
Â
A 27-15 third quarter was everything the Eagles needed. After the Raiders twice cut the lead to one point, the young Northwest squad got eight points from Van Loo in a 20-0 run. The Eagles scored on 10 of 12 possessions in 4:30 to take a 60-39 lead with 2:47 left in the third.
Â
Northwest carried a 62-46 lead into the fourth quarter. Southern Oregon got no closer than 12 points in the final frame.
Â
Maya DuChesne joined Van Loo in double figures for NU with 12 points to go with six assists. Biggerstaff had seven assists.
Â
The Eagles, now 2-6 overall and 1-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, entertain Oregon Tech Saturday at 5:30 p.m., while Southern Oregon (4-4, 0-1) heads to Evergreen State.
