Eagles Travel the Lewis and Clark Journey to Avoid Seattle Weather

PORTLAND, Ore. – Northwest University moved their originally scheduled home games to Portland, Oregon, after a severe snowstorm in the Seattle area. Eager to get their first non-conference games under their belt, the Eagles split with the Lewis and Clark Pioneers.

Game one – Northwest University (1-0, overall) 13, Lewis and Clark (0-1, overall) 12

The Pioneers came into the first game with strength. They jumped ahead to a quick, six-run lead in the top of the second inning. The Eagles responded well when Tighe, Contreras, and Wells all singled to bring in three runs, resulting in a 6-3 score at the bottom of the second inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Northwest started to find more power in their bats. Tighe hit a single run homerun over the center field fence, and Contreras doubled to left center, driving in Nunes to score for the Eagles. Northwest was slowly chipping away at Lewis and Clark's lead, bringing the score to 8-5 at the bottom of the fourth.
By the top of the fifth inning, the Pioneers were once again threatening the eight-run mercy rule, leading by seven runs (12-5). Once again, Tighe came through for the Eagles with a three-run homerun to bring the score to 12-8 at the bottom of the fifth.

The excitement came in the seventh inning when Northwest University found themselves down by four runs. After Contrera's single and Fish's double, the Eagles had cut the lead to one run, 12-11. Wells finished off the game with a walk off two-run homerun over the right field fence. The Eagles walked away with their first victory, 13-12.

Game two – Northwest University (1-1, overall) 2, Lewis and Clark (1-1, overall) 10 | 6 Innings

Once again, the Pioneers found a way to get an early jump on the Eagles, bringing in two runs in the top of the first inning. Northwest was able to manufacture a run when Heard stole second, and Caron came home on the throw.

Lewis and Clark then ran away with the game. With a big fifth inning, the Pioneers were able to bring in four runs, leading 9-2. Moffitt led the Pioneers by hitting 2 for 3 from the plate and getting one walk.

Lewis and Clark added one more run in the sixth inning, extending their lead to 8 runs (10-2). The Eagles were unable to prevent the eight-run mercy rule, ending the game after six innings.

Head coach Pam Fink commented, "We fought hard in the first game and showed a lot of grit. I'm very happy with that fire we showed. We spent a lot of emotion in that game and didn't really lock in on the second game. We have some things to work on to get better, and we will. I am extremely proud of the entire team."
