PORTLAND –
Cesar Sandoval and
Pa'Treon Lee recorded double-doubles in a 74-69 exhibition loss at NCAA Division I Portland Sunday.
Â
"I was proud of our kids today," said NU Head Coach
Jeff Drinkwine. "We played to win today instead of just playing to play. We weren't disappointed in our effort, just the outcome. I think that says a lot about our team."
Â
Lee had 13 points and 10 assists, while Sandoval added 12 points and 10 rebounds in the game that saw the Eagles out-shoot and out-rebound the Pilots. Lee also had a team-leading four steals.
Â
Northwest shot 47 percent from the field, including 43 percent from three-point range, going nine of 21 from the three-point arc.
Â
NU out-rebounded their hosts 37-31 but found themselves undone by 23 turnovers and 26 fouls. UP outscored the Eagles 20-6 at the free-throw line.
Â
"Their height wasn't as imposing as Oregon State's. We just turned it over too much, and we've got to cut that down," said Drinkwine.
Â
J.R. Delgado had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles. Cacoa Chatman and
Devante Powell scored nine points each,
Dejwan Walker tossed in seven, and
Jase Paulsen contributed six.Â
Â
Like their previous two exhibition games, the Eagles took an early lead. Paulsen knocked down a three-pointer for a 5-4 NU lead with just under four minutes gone in the first half.
Â
Portland led 31-27 at the half and held a 64-49 lead with 4:20 remaining in the game. Chatman and Delgado hit three-pointers to ignite a 12-1 NU run that saw the Eagles pull up to a 65-61 deficit on a Lee three-point play with 2:27 remaining.
Â
Lee scored again with eight seconds left to make it a three-point game, but the Eagles would get no closer from there.
Â
Northwest takes a week off before heading back to Portland on Dec. 8 to take on Portland State, barring any schedule changes.
