Volleyball Gets Sweep of Portland Matches

PORTLAND – Northwest completed a successful road weekend with a 3-1 win at Warner Pacific Saturday, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13.

"Terrific job by Warner tonight as their defense frustrated our attackers, and as it did, we lost patience and made a number of hitting errors," said NU Head Coach Steven Bain. "We also failed to serve our identity in the second set and Warner took full advantage. Credit our ladies though for getting back to their game in set 3. We were able to keep them out of their system and that allowed us to regain control of the match. Quick turnaround now so we will need to reset and prepare for a very tough road match at Evergreen on Tuesday."

The Eagles fell behind 3-0 in the opening set and the teams were deadlocked at 14-14 before Northwest took the lead for good on a 6-1 run, including two blocks and two kills by Abigail Broussard for a 20-15 lead. Azaria Johnson and Susana Bailey ended the match with a block.

After the Knights took the second set, the Eagles were dominant in the third and fourth sets. NU used a 9-0 run in the third set to open a 14-5 lead. Kalei Kepler and Bailey had two kills each in that run.

The Eagles had four 3-0 or 4-0 runs in the final set with Bailey ending the match with a kill.

Broussard led the Eagles with 18 kills with Bailey adding 14. Anna Saelens had 47 assists and Broussard added four aces.

Broussard led the front-line defense with six blocks and Johnson added four. Cristina Lorenz had 19 digs and Saelens added 13.

Now 8-10 overall and 7-6 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the Eagles finish off their five-match road swing with a Tuesday night contest at Evergreen State in Olympia. The match starts at 7 p.m.
