KIRKLAND – Northwest hammered out a 70-66 win over Puget Sound on Saturday, getting big defensive stops and key rebounds to hold off the Loggers.
Â
The Eagles led 36-35 at the half.Â
Â
Up 60-56 with 7:26 remaining, Trevan Newman got a steal at halfcourt and flicked the ball forward to Connor Drinkwine for a layup to keep UPS at bay.Â
Â
NU took an eight-point lead on a Newman three-point play with 4:11 to go, but Puget Sound whittled the advantage down to 68-66 with 50 seconds remaining.Â
Â
Tanner Davis came up with a crucial offensive rebound and was fouled. He made both free throws and delivered the final points of the game with 13.6 seconds to go.Â
Â
Newman came off the bench to lead the Eagles with 18 points. Davis had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Rayvaughn Bolton added 11 points, and CaCoa Chatman added 10 points to go with three steals. Bolton led the Eagles with seven assists. Pa'Treon Lee scored and gave the team energy from off the bench.
Â
"That was an old-fashioned slugfest tonight, and we gutted it out," said NU Head Coach Jeff Drinkwine. "They were even more physical than the team last night. This was our fifth game in eight days. Our legs were a little tired, but we kept working hard. Tanner's offensive rebound was huge. Tre and Joose (Lee) came in and played well. I don't remember the last time we got out-rebounded and only made three three-pointers and won. We only turned the ball over 10 times, and that's a season low for us."
Â
The Eagles get a few days off before heading out on the road to resume the Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule. NU plays at Lewis-Clark State on Friday and Walla Walla on Saturday.
