BELLEVUE – Northwest split a pair of blowouts with Warner Pacific Saturday, losing the opener 8-1 before reeling off a 12-2 win in the second game.
Â
"We made the adjustments we needed, and I'm thrilled with the way we bounced back after the first game," said NU Head Coach
Pam Fink. "We did a good job in the second game putting the bat on the ball."
Â
The Eagles had just four hits in the first game, including two by
Sammi Caron.
Jessica Nunes had a triple, and
Sam Parisio added a single.
Â
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, NU got one of the runs back in the third inning on an RBI single by Caron.
Â
Warner Pacific erupted for six runs in the fourth, the big blow being a grand slam by Devinne Amesquita.
Â
Becca Rennick took the loss for Northwest.
Â
The Knights scored their two runs in the first inning of the second game.
Â
Northwest made it a 2-1 game in the second when
Jordan Dippel singled, moved to second on a sacrifice by Parisio, stole third, and scored on a squeeze bunt by
Palena Gomes.
Â
NU broke out for five runs in the fourth. Parisio opened the inning with her second home run of the season.
Ashley Oswald doubled, Caron was hit by a pitch, and
Kayla Stanley had a bunt single before Nunes launched a ball on top of the batting cages' roof for a grand slam.
Â
Stanley added an RBI single, and
Nicola Fish produced a sacrifice fly to give NU an 8-2 lead in the fifth.
Â
Alyssa Maldonado singled, stole second, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Parisio for a 9-2 Eagle lead in the sixth.
Â
Northwest pushed three more runs across in the top of the seventh on an error, an RBI single by Maldonado, and an RBI double by Dippel.
Â
Warner Pacific loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the seventh, but
Sydney Maurer induced a 1-2-3 double play and got the final batter on a fly out to get her first collegiate pitching win.Â
Â
Maurer went the distance, allowing one earned run.
Â
Maldonado had four of NU's 13 hits in the game. Stanley and Dippel had two each, while Fish, Nunes, Parisio, Oswald, and Gomes had one hit apiece.
Â
The same two teams meet again for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday.
