Eagles Improve to 2-0 in CCC

KIRKLAND – Northwest held Multnomah to a .030 attack percentage and claimed a 3-1 conference victory in Kristi Brodin Pavilion Saturday.

The Eagles won 25-11, 25-20, 23-25, 25-9.

"First, credit Multnomah for reminding us that hard work and effort are required if you want to win in the CCC," said NU Head Coach Steven Bain. "I was impressed with their intensity and resolve, and they played each point fully, which is a credit to Colton and the culture that he has established."

Northwest got double-doubles from Megan Horne and Anna Saelens with Abigail Broussard coming up just short. Horne led the team with 21 kills and added 10 digs. Saelens registered 44 assists and 11 digs. Broussard tacked on 11 kills and nine digs.

The Eagles racked up nine aces with Jill Botsford getting three while Savannah Hale, Cristina Lorenz, and Broussard added two each.

The Eagle also got 10 blocks with Azaria Johnson leading with six assists while Saelens and Broussard added four apiece and Susana Bailey and Horne three each. Lorenz led the back line with 25 digs with Botsford adding 10.

Northwest employed a 9-1 run to build an 18-7 lead in the first set as the Lions had two service errors and five attack errors. Botsford later closed out the set with an ace.

The Eagles were up just 19-18 in the second set before Broussard had two kills and share and block with Saelens for a 5-0 run. Horne finished the set with a kill.

After a third-set hiccup, the Eagles floored the accelerator and never trailed in the fourth set. NU got the first six points, including two kills by Johnson.

NU finished on a 5-0 run, including two kills each by Broussard and Horne.

"For the most part, we were mindful of the opportunity but we strayed from our commitment in the third set and Multnomah took full advantage," Bain said. "Fortunately, we responded in the correct manner and upgraded our serving and passing to take control of the match. Our energy and resolve were also terrific in set 4 and hopefully, we can build on that foundation as we embark on a tough road stretch the next two weeks."

Now 3-4 on the season and 2-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the Eagles take to the road to face Southern Oregon in Ashland on Friday, Sept. 10.
