KIRKLAND – Lewis-Clark State's Rachel Schroeder sank two free throws with three seconds left and handed Northwest a tough 62-61 loss Saturday afternoon.
LCSC trailed by one with four seconds left, forced a five-second call on an NU inbound attempt, and got to the free throw line despite the best efforts of the Eagles' defense.
Northwest took a 61-58 lead when
Maya DuChesne scored after rebounding her own miss with 1:04 to play. Both teams got defensive stops before the Warriors got a basket inside by Callie Stevens with four seconds left.
After a timeout, NU was unable to get the ball back in play. After a flurry of timeouts, the Warriors got the ball below their basket and got the lob pass into Schroeder, who quickly went up, and the whistle blew to send her to the free throw line.
"I am proud of our team," said NU Head Coach
Ken Crawford. "They did everything I asked them to do. We all take responsibility for the outcome. That's a tough way to lose that ballgame."
Grace Meza led the Eagles with 20 points, with
Livi Lindsey adding 11 and
Shelaine Lorenz 10.
Sam VanLoo had 10 rebounds and a team-high seven assists.
Stevens led the Warriors with 18 points, and Heidi Sellman posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Eagles, now 12-8 overall and 6-7 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, travel to Southern Oregon on Friday and Oregon Tech on Saturday.
"We get another chance to find out what we are made of, going from a tough loss to a tough road trip," Crawford said.
