ASHLAND, Ore. – Northwest couldn't come up with one more late basket to force overtime, falling instead to Southern Oregon 63-59 Friday night.
Â
Northwest trailed 60-53 with 3:28 left in the game but put itself in position to tie on its last possession.
CaCoa Chatman hit a jumper with 2:36 to go and added another at the 1:50 mark after a defensive rebound by
Tanner Davis.
Â
The Eagles forced another SOU miss with 41 seconds remaining, and
Rayvaughn Bolton grabbed the rebound.
Tanner Davis scored with an assist from Chatman to make it a 60-59 game with 27 seconds to go.
Â
Northwest had to foul four times to get SOU at the free-throw line where Atmar Mundu left the door open with a make and a miss with 18 seconds remaining. An errant pass under the basket ended the last gasp for the Eagles.
Â
NU struggled to a 31.3 shooting performance in the first half, buoyed primarily by Chatman's 14 points of 5-8 shooting.
Â
"Our guys battled and stayed the course tonight," said NU Head Coach
Jeff Drinkwine. "I'm so proud of this team's togetherness and effort. Tonight, unfortunately, we came up short. We will regroup and be ready tomorrow."
Chatman led the Eagles with 25 points and three steals with Davis adding 10 points. Bolton led NU with 10 rebounds and shared the lead in assists at four with Chatman.
Tez Allen led the Raiders with 22 points.
Â
Now 9-10 overall and 6-8 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the Eagles finish the road trip with a 5 p.m. contest at Oregon Tech on Saturday.
