Eagles Tame Wolves

KIRKLAND – Northwest bounced back from a tough loss on Friday with a 51-43 win over Walla Walla on Saturday.

Kyrin Baklund led the Eagles with 13 points, with Katie Fleming getting six points and a team-leading 11 rebounds.

Northwest trailed for the first 13 minutes of the game but never let the Wolves get out of reach.

"I'm proud of how we responded to a tough loss on Friday," said NU Head Coach Ken Crawford. "Until we get to know each other and how we work together, we're going to have to grind out games and grind out wins. That's what we did tonight. We're not shooting well right now, but we are playing good defense and rebounding well. That's how you ground out wins."

The Eagles tied the game at the 6:40 mark of the first half and took their first lead 90 seconds later on a basket by Maya DuChesne, 15-13. Walla Walla led 23-21 at the half.

After falling behind by four early in the third quarter, Maria Arroyo-Sanchez gave the Eagles life with six of her seven points, two rebounds, and an assist during a 9-0 Northwest run.

The Eagles led by as many as eight points in the third quarter and took a 36-30 lead into the final frame.

Walla Walla trimmed the lead to three points before Baklund hit a three-pointer and a two-point basket in a 7-0 run to bulk the lead to 46-36 with 3:38 to go. The Wolves got no closer than five points after that.

NU out-rebounded the Wolves 46-31 with Grace Harder adding eight rebounds to Fleming's 11.

Now 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the Eagles travel to Evergreen State on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
