Eagles Split at WPU

PORTLAND – Northwest picked up a split at Warner Pacific on Friday, winning the first game 4-2 before falling 8-4.

The Eagles had 10 hits in each game.

"We hit the ball all day, but we didn't capitalize on some of our opportunities," said NU Head Coach Pam Fink. "We left way too many runners on base (nine in each game). We'll come back out tomorrow and try to win this series."

NU 4, WPU 2

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Eagles tied the game in the second inning. Jessica Nunes doubled to left and moved to third on a fly out by Sam Parisio before scoring on an error.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Parisio doubled and scored on an RBI single by Madisyn Leffle.

WPU tied the game in the fifth, but Northwest pushed across two runs in the seventh for the final margin.

Bella King and Leffle started the inning with a single and moved up on a sacrifice by Kayla Stanley. Nicola Fish came through with a sacrifice fly ahead of an RBI infield single by Jordan Dipple.

King went the distance in the circle for NU, striking out four for her fifth win of the season.

Leffle and Emily Barry had two hits each to pace the offense, with Stanley, Fish, Dippel, Jessica Nunes, Parisio, and King getting one each.

WPU 8, NU 4

The Knights smashed two two-run home runs in the first inning after the Eagles had taken a 3-0 lead.

Leffle led off the first with a single, stole second, and scored on a double by Barry. Fish walked, and both runners scored after a wild pitch and a two-run double by Alyssa Maldonado.

The final run for the Eagles came in the fourth inning. Ashley Carter doubled and scored on a base hit by Leffle.

Carter led the Eagles with three hits. Leffle added two, and Stanley, Barry, King, Dippel, and Maldonado had one each.

Leffle stole four bases in the two games, giving her 22 on the season and marking just the second time in school history a player has eclipsed 20 stolen bases in a season. Darian Godfrey established the school record of 26 in 2018.

The Eagles and Knights finish off the series on Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
