Eagles Drop Two in Canada

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Northwest dropped two games at British Columbia on Wednesday, falling 2-0 and 3-1.

The short-handed Eagles were shut out for the first time this season.

"I'm proud of the effort we got out of our team today," said NU Head Coach Pam Fink. "I know the rest of the team was there in spirit. It makes a big difference when we can't all be together. We had some things not go the right way, especially in the last inning of the first game. We are ready to get back together as a whole this weekend."

UBC 2, NU 0

Northwest out-hit its host in the opener but had two controversial calls go against them in the top of the seventh inning. Those calls could have seen the Eagles load the bases with no outs.

Abbey Blahut and Jordan Dippel had two hits each with Emily Barry and Alyssa Maldonado getting one apiece.

Sydney Maurer took the hard-luck loss, allowing two runs on five hits in the complete game.

UBC 3, NU 1

Northwest took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Dippel singled, moved to second on a ground out by Nicola Fish, and scored on an RBI single by Alyssa Maldonado.

UBC posted its three runs, including two unearned runs, in the bottom of the fourth.

Becca Rennick allowed one earned run and fanned five in the complete-game loss.

NU again out-hit the T-Birds. Maldonado led the Eagles with two hits while Madisyn Leffle, Dippel, Blahut, and Maurer had one each. Maurer had her first double of the season and Leffle stole three bases to become the first NU player to reach 30 steals in a season, now with 31.

NU returns to action Friday and Saturday with 11 a.m. doubleheaders at Bellevue College against eighth-ranked Southern Oregon.
