LA GRANDE - The Northwest University women's volleyball team ended it's long road trip tonight with a loss to Eastern Oregon, 21-25, 19-25, 15-25.
The Eagles stayed hot the the Mountie's trail in the first set, eventually leading to a tied frame at 16-16. Karste Wright landed back-to-back kills for the Eagles giving NU an 18-16 lead. The Mounties quickly responded and took the lead back at 20-19, allowing NU just two more points before securing the set.
Two large Mountie runs in the second set left little room for the Eagles to respond. Eastern Oregon carried it's momentum into the third set, creating another six point run that gave them a comfortable lead over the Eagles resulting in a three set defeat.
Head Coach Steve Bain says, "Our ladies played with more resolve tonight and the effort was there but when you play a top ranked team, that's not enough. Eastern's defense was terrific, especially at the net and it magnified our inability to execute in tough swing situations. Losses like this do point out your weaknesses though so we will get back to work next week and work on the upgrades that will make us more competitive as we enter the final weeks of the season."
Wright collected eight kills on the night, while Kylie Lunday had six kills and four total blocks.
Kelsey Moore totaled 19 digs and four assists.
Next on the schedule, the Eagles will be making up for a postponed match against The Evergreen State College on October, 18 in Olympia, WA.
