KIRKLAND, WA - After a faltering first set, the Northwest University women's volleyball team pulled out its second win of senior weekend over Warner Pacific in four sets, 19-25, 25-9, 25-14, 25-16.
A greedy Warner Pacific squad came out swinging in set one of the Saturday night match, taking a 10-5 lead over the Eagles. NU responded with three kills totaled by Morgan Harter, Delaney Sparks, and Kylie Lunday, quickly closing Warner Pacific's five point lead. The Eagles kept within close distance until a couple of errors gave the momentum back to the Knights. NU could not tie enough points in a row together to catch the Knights before Warner Pacific reached a first set win, 25-19.
The Eagle offense livened right at the start of the second set and went on a 7-1 run over the Knights, with kills from Kylie Lunday, Kaitlyn, Mickle, and Azaria Johnson. The Eagles gave little room for the Knights to breathe as they went on another 7-0 run, fueled by two kills from Johnson. Leading 16-3, the Eagles found their way to a 25-9 second set win
An opening kill from Lunday in set three electrified the Eagle offense once again, instigating a 12-6 run. The Knights shook off the damage, stringing together four consecutive points, making it a 12-10 set, led by the Eagles. Mickle notched three kills, complimented by Sparks' two in a 8-0 run which ushered NU to a 25-15 third set win.
The Knights open set four with a kill which NU greeted with a kill by Lunday and block by Johnson and Sparks. Both sides of the net fought for points, but the Eagles were able to close off rallies in their favor more often than not. A block by Lunday and Sparks sealed the deal, and secured a 25-16 fourth set victory, as well as a 4-1 match win.
Head Coach Steve Bains says, "At every level the game is decided by first contacts and it matters not who the opponent is or where you play. Tonight, Warner was simply better than we were in the first set and as a result, they were able to control the outcome. Frankly, we challenged our ladies to make the physical and mental commitment to rise up and once they did, we were able to take control of the match. Now that the regular season is over, we are thankful for the opportunity to host a playoff match and we look forward to the challenge of playing a talented Lewis-Clark State College squad."
Mickle paved the offense with 19 kills followed by Johnson with 12 kills and four blocks.Â
Allie Flynn and Morgan Harter each totaled 27 assists.
Kelsey Moore continues to lead the back line, collecting 30 kills on senior night.
Finishing league-play with a 14-8 record, Northwest secured the fifth spot in conference. The Eagles will host eighth seed, Lewis-Clark State College on Nov. 7 in Kirkland, WA at 7 p.m. for the first round of the CCC Volleyball Tournament.
