Eagles Take CCC Series at Corban

WILSONVILLE, Ore. – A long day in Oregon saw Northwest establish a new school record with its sixth consecutive win and claim a conference road series, before losing in a walk-off in the conference finale on Saturday and then bouncing back for an 8-2 win to close the series.
 
"We were pretty sloppy on defense until that last game but I'm proud of how they overcame that tough loss, the cold and the long day to close out on a positive note," said NU Head Coach Pam Fink.
 
In the completion of Friday's second game, things got wild in the final two innings.
 
Up 4-3 in the top of the sixth when play resumed Saturday morning, with 13 more runs scoring in the game.
 
Sydney Maurer drew an RBI walk, Paige Creasey added a two-run single, Maurer scored on a wild pitch and Olivia Brown singled in two runs for an 11-4 NU lead.
 
Corban scored four runs on two hits and three NU errors in the home half of the sixth to narrow the gap to 11-8.
 
Madisyn Leffle singled, stole second and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Maurer in the seventh.
 
Corban added a home run in the seventh but could get no closer than the 12-9 final.
 
On Friday, NU scored four times in the third inning, getting a two-run double by Maurer and RBI singles by Creasey and Brown.
 
Corban tied the game with four runs in the fourth on three hits and an error.
 
Chloe Van Boekhout singled and scored on an error in the sixth and play was suspended with one out and an Eagle on base in that inning.
 
NU finished that game with 14 hits, led by Creasey and Van Boekhout with three each. Leffle, Maurer and Brown added two apiece.
 
The Eagles made six errors in the conference series finale and allowed runs in every inning.
 
NU had 18 hits in the game, led by Abby Blahut with four and Maurer and Van Boekhout with three each. Kayla Stanley, Creasey and Bella King had two hits each. Maurer had five RBIs, King added three, Stanley and Jamelah Lewis had two each and Creasey and Van Boekhout had one apiece. Blahut tied a school record with her four hits in one game, becoming the eighth Eagle to reach that mark.
 
In the final game, NU got the offense going in the first inning with a two-run single by Brown and an RI single by Van Boekhout for a quick 3-0 lead.
 
The Eagles scored four more in the second on an RBI grounder by Maurer, an RBI double by Lewis, a sacrifice fly by Brown and a run-scoring wild pitch.
 
Corban scored in the fifth but NU got that run back on a sacrifice fly by Sarah Anderson.
 
King got the complete-game win.
 
The Eagles had had 10 hits in the game with Van Boekhout accounting for three. Lewis and Brown had two apiece.
 
Now 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the Eagles host British Columbia for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
