NU First Loss of Preseason: 2-3

SPOKANE, WA - The Northwest University men's soccer team endured its first preseason loss to Whitworth today, 2-3. This was the Eagle's final match before heading into conference play.

In a physical match on both ends of the field, the Eagles had one less shot on goal than the Pirates. Brayden Corwin, Jacen Stein, and Tyler Hopp each had two shots on target.

The first goal of the match was scored by Whitworth in the 32nd minute.

Shortly into the second half, Jacen Stein tied the match, his second unassisted goal of the season.

Five minutes after the NU goal, Whitworth took the lead again at 2-1.

A foul committed by the Eagle defense gave the Pirates a penalty kick that led to the 3-1 lead in the 69th minute.

Brayden Corwin found the back of the net in the 87th minute to give the Eagles a chance to tie in the last three minutes. Though the men pushed the ball hard, they could not get a third goal in the short amount of time.

"Traveling and playing in the same day can be tough and it definitely was for us today," says Head Coach Gary McIntosh. "We give credit to Whitworth as they came out organized and with a lot of energy. We did not play how we wanted to and we made it hard on ourselves. We need to be more disciplined and trust ourselves. One thing that that stood out as a positive was that we never gave up and we had a fighting spirit until the end, and we almost got the tying goal."

The Eagles see the field next on September 15 as they open up conference at home against Eastern Oregon.
