KIRKLAND, WA - Down a couple of key players, the Eagles were able to hold off a late surge by the Wolves to claim the victory over Walla Walla, 74-72.
The Eagles were able to start strong and gain the lead in the first quarter to give themselves a foundation to build on during the game. The second quarter allowed Northwest to build on its lead as the Eagles reached a 22-point lead with 2:43 left to go before half.
Northwest was able to continue its momentum and widen its lead coming out of halftime. As the Wolves started to apply pressure, the Eagles led by 14 going into the final ten minutes. The fourth quarter proved the most difficult for the Eagles, as Walla Walla made its push to try to take the lead. As the Wolves came within one with 15 seconds left,
Kyrin Baklund landed a free throw to give the Eagles a two-point lead. As Walla Walla had the last shot of the game, the Eagles survived a last-second three attempt to take home the victory.
"What a game!" said NU Head Coach
Ken Crawford. "It actually felt like three games in one. A lot of compliments to Walla Walla who hung in there and did not back down. And neither did the Eagles, which made for a classic! Now we turn around and get ready for tomorrow."
Northwest saw both Baklund and
Esther Pappuleas lock in season-high points. Baklund led the team with 24 points, while Pappuleas scored 20.
Kylie Lunday also secured a season high with 18 rebounds for the day.
