Eagles Ride Turvy Win On The Road

Olympia, WA - The Northwest women's basketball team improves to 2-1 within the division in victory over Evergreen State College 70-65.

Riding some momentum from the weekend, the Eagles traveled to Olympia to face the Geoducks and were able to get a win in a back and forth affair. The first quarter soundly belonged to the Geoducks as they shot half of both their field goals and three-pointers whereas the Eagles scored 7-21 and 1-7 in threes, however the Eagles were able to keep the game close by only being down two.

The Eagles' offense went back to work and outscored the Geoducks in the second quarter 19-15. The Eagles did better in the three-point category, shooting 3-7 and went 8-21 overall, whereas the Geoducks shot 6-16 and missed both of their three-point attempts. And thanks to this offensive showing from the Eagles, they were able to go into the half with the lead 34-32.

Both offenses livened up in the third quarter with both teams putting relatively even numbers. The Eagles shot 6-15, went 2-10 beyond the three-point line and went perfect on their two free throws. Meanwhile the Geoducks went 6-17, 2-5 in threes and perfect on four of their free throws, which was the difference maker as the Geoducks outscored the Eagles in the third.

With neither team able to shake each other off, the Eagles stepped up and took the fourth for themselves. The Eagles' defense contributed seven steals and the offense shot 6-15 (again), 3-7 in threes and drilled six out of their seven free throws. The Eagles were also able to put up 12 rebounds which solidified the game in their favor.

Kaleah Medeiros continues to impress, leading the team in points on the night with 19, Kimberly Carrada Sanchez followed behind with 15 points and Ellie De Waard recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Jalyn Sackrider of the Geoducks also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Saydee Anderson suffered a thumb injury during the second quarter and is considered week-to-week.

"Excited we were able to persevere once again in a game that featured I believe 13 lead changes and 16 ties," said Head Coach Randall Edens. "Opened it up to 10 points there in the 3rd quarter with an important spurt and managed the 4th quarter fairly well with a lot of new names in different roles due to another injury with one of our starters from Saturday, Saydee Anderson. We're not sure how long she will be out. We got important contributions at key points from Jaelyn Moeva, Bea Simon who had an important defensive role taking away Sydney Van Ness from Evergreen and scoring from Kaleah, Kim and Elly at huge junctures proved to be the difference."
