Kirkland, WA - The Northwest women's basketball team welcomed Pacific Lutheran University for an exhibition game, where the Eagles escaped with the win in overtime, 82-75.
The Eagles had a strong start to the game, outscoring the Lutes 39-27 and hitting half of their shots and threes and all of their free throws. The Eagles looked poised to run away with the game, but the Lutes had other ideas.
The Lutes slowly inched their way back and had an explosive third period, hitting 10-18 of their shots and 3-4 of their threes. At the final buzzer, the Lutes managed to send the game into overtime with the score being 72 all.
In overtime, the Eagles sprung back into action and were able to outscore the Lutes 10-3. The Lutes could not find the net in their shots and threes, going 0-7 in field goals and 0-3 in threes. The Eagles, meanwhile, kept it simple and concise, hitting 3-5 in shorts and 4-6 in free throws. It was enough for the Eagles to pull off with the gutsy win.
"Really impressed with tonight's win," said Head Coach Randall Edens. "We got off to a great start and really shot it well from distance in the first half. I thought offensively we had a pretty good flow for the most part, and that led to the 12-point lead. We got stagnant a bit in the third but found our way with great execution out of timeouts that kept us with an eight-point lead after the third.
"Down the stretch, we had them get loose for some open shots, but where I think we will benefit the most tonight is the last four minutes of regulation, and being able to take it to OT, and finding our way to get a win. Saydee opened the OT with a huge bucket, and then it was about staying in the moment. We knocked down our free throws when we needed to. Good win for our young squad figuring things out."
