Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Berry’s Early Goal Lifts Eagles Past Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Alivia Berry scored just 43 seconds into the match, and Addison Carter recorded a shutout as Northwest University women's soccer defeated The Evergreen State College 1-0 Saturday at Geoduck Pitch in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Eagles extended their winning streak to six matches, controlling the attack with a 22-7 advantage in shots and an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.

Northwest wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Following a corner kick by Lily McMullen, Berry finished from five yards out for her first goal of the season. McMullen earned the assist, giving the Eagles a lead they would protect the rest of the way.

Carter kept Evergreen off the board with two first-half saves, stopping Adaire Van Tuyl in the fifth minute and Izzy Widener in the 43rd. Northwest entered halftime ahead 1-0 after holding a 4-3 advantage in shots.

The Eagles increased their offensive pressure after the break, recording 18 shots and seven corner kicks in the second half. Hailey Deese nearly doubled the lead when her shot struck the post in the 58th minute. She followed with a header on goal less than two minutes later, but Evergreen goalkeeper Melina Grijalva made the save.

Northwest continued creating chances throughout the half. Madison Coulter tested Grijalva in the 66th minute, while Madeline Johnson had a late attempt cleared by an Evergreen defender. Neveah Howerton added another shot on goal in the closing minutes.

Carter finished with three saves in 90 minutes, including a stop on Macey Swensen in the 83rd minute to preserve the shutout.

Coulter, Deese, Johnson and Liliana Eckert each recorded three shots to lead Northwest. Deese placed two attempts on goal as the Eagles finished with eight shots on goal.

"We had a good game where we were able to continue to build on the things we've been working on," head coach April VanAssche said. "Great job by our defense and goalkeeper to keep the shutout! Super excited we got another win this weekend!"

Northwest closes the regular season with two CCC road matches next weekend. The Eagles visit College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, on Friday, Oct. 30, at 4 p.m. MT before facing Eastern Oregon in La Grande, Ore., on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m. The trip marks Northwest's final two matches before postseason play.
