CALDWELL, Idaho — A shot off the crossbar denied Northwest University men's soccer a chance to cut into a two-goal deficit early in the second half Friday, and College of Idaho pulled away for a 5-0 victory at Simplot Stadium.
Samuel Brendle struck the crossbar in the 59th minute with the Eagles trailing 2-0. Less than three minutes later, Greyson Pew finished a pass from Alfie Roffey to extend the Yotes' advantage.
Northwest goalkeeper Bailey Hopkins made eight saves, all in the first half, as College of Idaho generated 15 shots before the break. Tyler Swartz opened the scoring in the 19th minute off an assist from Roffey, who then converted a penalty kick in the 26th minute for a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Eagles recorded six of their 10 shots after halftime but could not find the net. Following Pew's goal, Mathias Christensen scored in the 67th minute, and Alejandro Cortes added the final goal in the 85th.
Matthew Ludlow and Nick Rivera each attempted three shots for Northwest, with Ludlow accounting for both of the Eagles' shots on goal. College of Idaho finished with 22 shots and an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Northwest moved to 4-9-1 overall and 2-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. The Yotes improved to 4-5-5 overall and 4-2-4 in the CCC.
The Eagles conclude their season tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 31, at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
