KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University men's soccer fell 2-1 to Southern Oregon University on Friday, Sept. 18, at the NU Athletic Field.
The Eagles got on the board first in the seventh minute when Roland Ngoy scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Bernardo Costa, giving Northwest a 1-0 lead.
Southern Oregon answered in the 16th minute as Michael Mutchukian scored off an assist from Elias Ahmed to tie the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Northwest continued to battle in the second half, with Bailey Hopkins making several saves to keep the Eagles within reach. Southern Oregon found the game-winning goal with just 13 seconds remaining as Jonathan Gaspar scored unassisted in the 90th minute to give the Raiders the 2-1 victory.
Hopkins finished with 11 saves for Northwest, while Southern Oregon goalkeeper Daniel Espinosa recorded three saves. The Raiders held a 25-8 advantage in shots.
"The result from today's game is not what we had hoped for, but I'm proud of the way the guys battled on the field today," said head coach Gary McIntosh. "This is a tough conference and every time we step foot on the field this is the type of energy and competitiveness that we need to play with. I felt like we had some good moments in the game that forced SOU to make adjustments and come up with some key saves. With the game tomorrow, we have no time to dwell on the loss and we move on quickly to prepare for the game against Oregon Tech."
Northwest moves to 2-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow, Sept. 19, hosting Oregon Tech at the NU Athletic Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. PST.
