KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University women's soccer finished off their CCC home opening weekend with a momentous win against Oregon Tech. Saturday, Sept. 19th marks the day that a 9-year losing streak to OIT is broken with a 1-0 homestand at the NU Athletic Field.
OIT rallied to keep their streak alive with 6 shots and 4 on goal throughout the match. However, they were met with no luck as Ali Tiechner made 4 saves to keep the Owls scoreless.
Northwest set the tone with an aggressive attack, tallying 10 shots with 3 on goal. In the 38th minute, the only goal for either team was scored by Madison Coulter off an assist from Jersey Walker. This was shortly followed by a goal from Talia Hurst that was controversially disallowed for offside.
The second half was a fight to hold off OIT's push for an equalizer. Ali Tiechner explained that the gameplan coming out of the break was to "hold it down… pass and possess". This was executed as the Eagles kept their 1-0 advantage and secured their first conference win of the season.
Coulter was asked how it feels getting this historic win in the opening weekend of conference play, it being "A great feeling because everyone just worked so much and [the win] was inevitable from the hard work put in all week".
Northwest, now 2-2-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference play. When asked how the upset win over the Owls sets up this season, Tiechner said, "We're on fire and we're just going to continue to get better".
The Eagles have an upcoming set of games on the road in Montana against Carroll College and Rocky Mountain College, September 24th and 26th .
