HELENA, Mont. – Northwest University men's soccer fell 2-1 to Carroll College on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Nelson Stadium.
Carroll opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Cyrille Wangama found the back of the net off assists from Felix Billard and Sean Balen. The Saints carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Eagles responded in the second half, with Clayton Johnson scoring in the 59th minute to even the match at 1-1. Johnson finished a pass from Dustin Le for his goal.
Carroll regained the lead in the 70th minute when Billard scored off an assist from Balen. Northwest continued to battle but was unable to find the equalizer.
Northwest finished with seven shots, four on goal, while Carroll recorded 17 shots, five on target. Bailey Hopkins made three saves for the Eagles.
Head Coach Gary McIntosh praised the team's effort throughout the match.
"The boys played a great game. Effort and fight was there for the whole 90 minutes. I feel like we were a bit unlucky not to find a second goal. We had the momentum but could not capitalize on some key moments. Going down to ten men made the last 25 minutes tough, but I'm proud of the guys for how they played the last minutes. We will continue to learn from the games we play and prepare for the next one," McIntosh said.
The Eagles will continue their road trip on Saturday, Sept. 26, when they face Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. MT.
