Fred Luke is in his seventh year as an assistant track coach working with javelin throwers.
 
He attended Bellingham High School and was a two-time participant in the javelin at the 4A state track meet. He was inducted into the school’s sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
 
Coach Luke is a graduate of the University of Washington where he competed four years in the javelin and earned a degree in metallurgical engineering. He was 6th at the NCAA Championships and an All-American his junior year.
 
Coach Luke was a four-time All-American javelin thrower after college, earning two national titles with a best of 85.6m (280' 8"). In 1972, as a member of the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team, he was a javelin finalist in the Olympic Games and placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of  81.24m (266’-6”). He has also represented the US as a javelin thrower internationally on three US track teams.
 
Coach Luke has been coaching boy and girl javelin throwers at various high schools since 2006. During that time, twenty four throwers qualified for the Washington State track meet and four were state champions.
 
Coach Luke retired after 40 years with Boeing as an engineer. He and his wife Margaret now live in Mill Creek. They are both attenders and involved in leadership at Westminster Chapel church.
