Second Half Goal Lifts NU Over Knights

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Josh Guerrero's goal in the 50th minute lifted the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Warner Pacific in CCC play this afternoon.

Guerrero's goal came off a crossing pass from teammate Mack Samuelsen from the left side and Guerrero finished with a header from 6 yards out into the upper left corner of the net.

NU's Taylor Young gave Northwest the early lead at the 22:16 mark as he scored from 10 yards out on the right side after Mack Samuelsen laid a pass to Josh Guerrero who got the ball to Young for the goal.

Almir Celebic tied the game with 32:10 showing on the clock as he dribbled up the left side and put his shot past NU goalkeeper, Joe Galbraith.

Both teams had opportunities in the second half, but Joe Galbraith made two big save late in the period as he stopped Ricky Carmolinga's shot in the 82nd minute and Jameson Jones' shot at the 86:51 mark. Guerrero came close to a 2nd goal as his header hit the crossbar at the 70th minute.

Northwest U. (6-3, 4-1 CCC) outshot Warner Pacific (2-4, 1-3 CCC) 18-14. Eagle goalkeeper, Joe Galbraith held the Knights scoreless in the second half with 6 of his 9 saves for the day. Dorian Lair grabbed 2 saves in goal for Warner Pacific.

Said Gary McIntosh, Northwest head coach, "I felt like today we controlled the tempo of the game and played our game. We continue to create scoring opportunities and we just need to get better a putting them in the goal. It was a good win for us today because the ultimate goal is to get wins at home."

Northwest U. travels to Klamath Falls on Friday to play Oregon Tech while Warner Pacific returns home to Portland to host Northwest Christian on Saturday.
