SPOKANE, Wash. – It took four sets and an exciting fifth set for Northwest University to defeat #25 Carroll College this morning, 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 18-16) in the 2nd annual CCC-Frontier Challenge at the Hub Sports Center.
The fifth set saw NU take an early 9-6 lead as two straight Carroll miscues and a kill by Olivia VanDlac would give the Eagles the lead. Carroll would battle back to tie the score at 9-all on kills by Kalli Prestwood and Rebecca Sweeney and an attack error by the Eagles. On the sixth tie of the set and the score knotted at 16-16, NU would close out the set and the match on a kill by senior Sarah Stoker and a service ace by Olivia VanDlac.
Rae Ann Haistings finished with a game high 16 kills for Northwest U. (2-1) with Sarah Stoker adding 12 and VanDlac 10 kills and 10 assists. Ashton Arbuthnot had a match high 52 assists while Leia Roy came through with a match high 34 digs. Arbuthnot added 12 digs for a double-double. Arika Zwack added 18 digs for NU.
Elli Graff led the way for Carroll (2-2) with 14 kills and 14 digs while Jonni Dorr led the team in assists with 32. Catie Hanser contributed a team high 27 digs.
"It was a good win for us," said NU coach Steven Bain. "Our players continue to make strides with their ability to stay focused on the things that tell them where to be and what to do. That ability allows us to stay composed in tight siutations and it paid off today with a terrific win against a talented team."
Northwest U. will play Montana Western at 2 p.m. in their second match of the day while Carroll takes on Oregon Tech at 4 p.m.
