Eagles Fall to No. 11 SOU in Four Sets

Rae Ann Haistings led the Eagles with 11 kills
Box Score ASHLAND – The surging Northwest University volleyball team battled hard, but in the end 11th-ranked Southern Oregon came back from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat the Eagles 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19) at Riehm Arena.

The Raiders (19-3 overall, 13-1 CCC) were rewarded for the ninth-straight win with sole possession of first place for the first time this season, thanks in part to third-place Concordia's four-set upset of eighth-ranked Eastern Oregon.

The Raiders held a 92-71 advantage in digs – granted, their lackluster total of 30 attacking errors contributed to that – in holding Northwest  (12-14, 5-10) to a .114 attacking average.

Northwest had upset Oregon Tech on Friday night, and last week became the first team outside of the top four in the standings to defeat a top-four team with a win against Concordia.

Rae Ann Haistings shined for the Eagles with 11 kills, while Amanda Waterman had nine and 22 digs. Leia Roy contributed 26 digs and three service aces.

"Southern Oregon is a terrific team with few weaknesses," said Steven Bain, Eagle head coach. "We simply weren't in system enough to side out with any consistency and that was a consequence of their defense and speed in transition. Experience is the best teacher though and I know the lessons learned tonight will make us a better team down the road."

SOU's sophomore middle Emma Gasman stayed hot with a career-high 20 kills on 32 swings and a .469 attacking average. Motade Atanda added 21 kills on a .226 average to lead the Raiders in that category for the fourth straight match.

Atanda also collected 12 digs, while Brookelynn Cole had a match-high 27, Paulla Pinheiro had 19 with 12 kills, and Tyana Andrews had 15.

"That's a really good team that keeps getting better and they made it hard on us," Raiders coach Josh Rohlfing said. "We were really tenacious tonight and responded well when (Northwest) won the second set."
