Eagle Men Open with Shutout Win over Boxers

Taylor Young scored the lone goal for the game today
Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University's lone first half goal was enough for the Eagles as they held on for a 1-0 non-conference win over Pacific University (Ore.) this afternoon in their season opener.

Playing in a light rain, NU's Taylor Young scored at the 12:22 mark as he took a pass from Odason Pelogi, dribbled up the middle and scored just right of the goal from 12 yards out. Each team had chances to score the remaining 78 minutes but defense and solid goalkeeper play prevented either team from a score. Odason Pelogi came close to scoring when his 16 yard blast from the left side hit the crossbar in the 87th minute. Pacific had several shots from close range either blocked or saved in the second half.

Leyton Thommasen had 7 saves in goal for Pacific (1-1) and Daniel Christenson grabbed 4 saves for the Eagles (1-0) earning the shutout. A physical game which would see 29 fouls and five yellow cards, Northwest U outshot the Boxers 14-8, but Pacific had 5 corners to NU's 3.

Said NU's coach Gary McIntosh following the game, "It's nice to begin the season with a win and a shutout. We showed up ready to play and did some good things today. The defense did a great job not allowing them to score today and offensively, we created many chances and should have had a few more goals. Taylor's goal was nice. I'm real pleased with the team."

Northwest will remain at home and will host Multnomah on September 6 at 10:00 a.m.
