Eagles Sweep Geoducks; Post First CCC Win

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – A young Northwest University Eagle team earned their first conference win with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) sweep of Evergreen tonight in the NU Pavilion. NU Coach Steven Bain went with three freshman and two sophomores as part of the starting line-up and improved to 1-4 in Cascade Conference play.

In set one, it looked as though Northwest might be in for a difficult night as Evergreen jumped out to a 14-6 lead capped off by Brandy Iverson and Jaclyn Trinque kills. But, the Eagles began to settle in and slowly chip away at the Geoduck lead. With the score 16-13 Evergreen, NU would tie the score at 16 after an attack error by Evergreen, a service ace by Christina Gleb and another ESC miscue. NU would take a 20-17 lead on a kill and service ace by Amanda Waterman. Evergreen would pull to within one, 21-20 after the teams traded errors, but the Eagles' Dakota Adams and Waterman would give NU the set win with two straight kills.

Northwest maintained momentum to begin the second set as they would lead 12-8. Four straight Geoduck miscues and a Waterman kill would grow the NU lead to 20-12 as they would win the set on a Hannah Hanson kill.

The third set would be close the entire way with nine ties. Evergreen would take a slim 7-5 lead after an NU service error, but a kill by Olivia VanDlac and two errors by the Geoducks would put NU into the lead, 8-7. In the set's final tie at 17-17, Northwest would take the lead for good after Brooke Riddle's service ace would put the Eagles in the lead, 19-17. Brandee Victorino's kill would make it a 24-22 score, but Mattie Jo Johnson's kills would end the set and the match.

Freshman Amanda Waterman (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led Northwest U (8-8, 1-4 CCC) with 12 kills and 12 digs. Freshmen Brooke Riddle (Spokane, Wash.) and Morgan Pilon (Olympia, Wash.) teamed up for 12 and 13 assists respectively while sophomore Leia Roy (Puyallup, Wash.) led the team with 15 digs.

Evergreen (10-7, 1-4 CCC) was led by Brandee Victorino's (Kauai, Hawaii) 13 kills and 11 digs.  Jaclyn Trinque (Spanaway, Wash.) registered a match high 32 assists and teammate Natimia Barker-Doss (Tacoma, Wash.) had a team high 22 digs for the Geoducks.

Commented NU head coach,Steven Bain, "It took us a little while to settle down in serve-receive but once that happened we were able to get system and put pressure on Evergreen's defense. One of the other keys was our preparation this week. We made several changes to the lineup and it could have been a distraction but we stayed focused and finished the week with a terrific effort."
