Eagles Persevere, Defeat OIT in Five Sets

Freshman Emmaline Stockton had 4 of the Eagles' 11 service aces
Box Score KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Northwest U and Oregon Tech traded wins in the first four sets, but it was NU winning the all-important fifth set for a hard fought 3-2 match victory over the Owls tonight (16-25, 25-19, 25-15, 20-25, 15-9).

The Eagle defense stepped up with 15 blocks while Mattie Jo Johnson and Amanda Waterman came through with 12 and 11 kills respectively.

Oregon Tech took the first set as they put together several runs which would help them stretch their lead . Leading 11-10, OIT would rattle off 5 straight points to lead 16-10. With Tech leading again, 20-14, they would outscore NU 5-4 to win the set.

Set two found NU trailing 11-9 in the early going, but the Eagles' defense would allow them to tie the game at 11 and take a 12-11 lead which they would not relinquish as Hannah Hanson and Dakota Adams' kills would help end the set for an Eagle win.

NU would carry their momentum over to the third set and after taking an 8-7 lead early, NU would lead the entire way as they would slowly pull away for the set victory putting them up 2-1.

OIT would regroup and the fourth set would see them breaking an 11-11 with three straight kills to lead 14-11. They would maintain the lead the rest of the way to tie the match at 2 sets a piece.

It would be Tech with the early momentum in the final set taking a 7-4 lead. But, a kill my Morgan Pilon would cut their lead to one, 7-6 and NU would force an attack error to tie the match at 7-7. After another tie at 8, two straight errors by OIT and a Leia Roy service ace would give the lead to the Eagles for good, 11-8, as two more OIT miscues and a kill by Hannah Hanson would give NU the hard fought match victory and a split on their weekend road trip.

In addition to the kills by Johnson and Waterman, Northwest U (13-6, 9-5 CCC) got a match high 37 assists from Morgan Pilon and 30 digs from Emmaline Stockton. Waterman added 13 digs for a double-double and Leia Roy also had 13 digs for the Eagles. NU also put together 11 service aces with Stockton ending up with 4 and Brooke Riddle adding 3.

"After a tough loss last night at SOU, I was concerned about our mindset and how we would respond," commented Coach Steve Bain of NU. "Perhaps, that was why we got off to such a slow start in the first set.  But, there was no panic and we just asked the players to keep working hard and good things would happen. Offensively, we struggled finding any holes in Oregon Tech's defense but at the same time, we put pressure on them with our serve and that set us up defensively to be good at the net. Lara Linden provided a big spark for us offensively and to get a split on this road trip is a nice return on the investment the players have been making to change and get better."

Northwest U returns home to Kirkland and will host The College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon in another tough CCC weekend series.
