SOU Grinds out Four Set Win over Eagles

Mattie Jo Johnson had a team high 14 kills tonight
Box Score ASHLAND, Ore. – The NU Eagles competed with the No. 12 ranked Southern Oregon Raiders, dropping a 3-1 match (15-25, 25-23, 15-25, 24-26) as SOPU had to dig deep  to win the fourth set with a 5-1 run.

Mattie Jo Johnson led Northwest U (12-6, 8-4) with 14 kills and 7 digs. Sydney Schlect finished with 10 kills while teammate Morgan Pilon had a team high 40 assist. Emmaline Stockton had 17 digs for the Eagles who pushed the NAIA ranked Raiders in sets two and four.
SOU broke open a close first set with two significant runs which would be too tough for the eagles to overcome. Leading NU 10-9, Southern Oregon would go on a 7-1 run to expand their lead to 17-10. Then, leading 19-14, SOU would again heat up for a 6-1 final push to win the set.

Set two would find the Eagles rebound after trailing 18-12, Northwest U would not give in and would slowly chip away at the Raider lead.  Two kills by Sydney Schlect would cut the SOU lead to one, 23-22. SOU would commit an attack error after an Alysanne Van Dyke serve to tie the match at 23 and another Schlect kills would give the Eagles the 24-23 led and after another Van Dyke serve, NU would win the set on another attack error by SOU.

Southern Oregon would rebound to lead the entire way in set three on their way to a 25-15 win capped off by a Tyana Andrews kill.

In set four, it looked as though NU would send the match to a fifth set as they led 15-11 midway through the set. But, back would come the No. 12 Raiders to tie the set at 16-all after a service error by Northwest U. NU would battle hard and continue to lead 23-21, but again the Raiders would come back to lead 24-23. Mattie Jo Johnson would tie the set at 24-24, but SOU would win the final two points for the set and match win.

Emmaline Stockton would add 17 digs for Northwest U as John hit .667 for the match. The Eagles would score on four service aces and the defense would total nine blocks to Southern's six.

Four Raiders hit in double figures for Southern Oregon (16-2, 9-2 CCC), led by Tyana Andrews' match high 17 kills and Corynn Kopra's 15 kills. Both Andrews and Kopra would add 9 kills to their totals. 55 assists would be a match high set by Lauren McGowne as the Raiders hit .308 as a team.

Said NU coach, Steve Bain, after the match: "I was really pleased our effort and focus tonight, especially when we were down in set two. It would have been easy to quit, but we fought back and made a match of it. Unfortunately, we couldn't hold off SOU in that fourth set and we need to learn from the experience so we can be better in that situation the next time it comes."

NU continues on the road in Klamath Falls tomorrow at 5 p.m. before heading back to Kirkland.
