Eagles Edge Warner Pacific in Five Sets

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest U came back from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat Warner Pacific 3-2 (25-15, 24-26, 26-28, 27-25, 15-11) in their final regular season match on Senior Night for the Eagles. With the win, Northwest U clinches the #4 seed into the CCC Championships which are scheduled to begin November 10.

NU got off to a quick start in the first set, jumping out to a 15-7 lead and maintaining the lead the entire set to take a 1-0 match lead.

Warner Pacific would come back strong in sets two and three with a second set that would see 16 ties. WPC would refuse to give in and with the set tied at 24-all, a kill by Grace Rivers and NU attack error would give the set to the Knights.

Set three would see Warner Pacific chip away at an 18-13 Northwest U lead to tie the set at 22-22. With the set tied once again at 26-26, two straight kills, one by Nicole Kincaide and one by Janessa White would give Warner Pac a 2-1 match advantage.

It looked as though WPC might win the fourth set with a 17-13 lead, but the Eagles would battle back to tie the set three times. The teams would battle to a 25-25 tie, but a Mattie Jo Johnson kill for NU and a service ace by Emmaline Stockton would send the match into the fifth and deciding set.

Down 8-6 in the final set, Northwest would score seven straight points aided by a Johnson kill and two WPC attack errors to take a 13-8 lead. WPC would not go away easily and would make it a 14-11 set until another kill by Mattie Jo Johnson would give the set and match victory to the Eagles.

Amanda Waterman led Northwest U (19-9, 14-6 CCC) with 16 kills and 10 digs for a double-double while teammate Mattie Jo Johnson finished with 15 kills. Morgan Pilon had 41 assists while Emmaline Stockton had 22 digs. Pilon added 12 digs for her double-double. NU's defense was solid with 17 blocks.

Janessa White led all hitters with 23 kills for Warner Pacific (11-14, 8-12 CCC). Teammate Kealia Rosa had a match high 65 assists and Mikaela Liskoski had a match high 27 digs for the Knights. Julia Toscano added 19 digs for the Knights.

"We came out with a strong approach and played extremely well in the first set," stated Steve Bain, NU head coach. "Warner got their offense untracked though and made plays at key moments to win sets 2 and 3. The only thing we told the girls was to keep working hard and eventually the match would turn. Fortunately, they did just that and they were rewarded with a gritty comeback and a hard fought victory. If we pay attention, the lessons learned from a match like this will make us a better team the next time we take the court."

Northwest U will open play in the Cascade Conference Championships with a first round home match hosting Corban on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
