Eagles Fly Over Geoducks for Conference Win

Amanda Waterman (#11) had a double-double tonight
Box Score OLYMPIA, Wash. – The NU Eagles rebounded from a first set loss to take the next three sets for a 3-1 (24-26, 25-14, 25-7, 25-16) conference win over Evergreen to improve to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Amanda Waterman led the way for Northwest U with a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Mattie Jo Johnson ended the match in double figures in blocks with a match high 10.

It looked as though the Eagles were on their way to a first set win taking a 16-8 lead, but Evergreen slowly chipped away at the NU lead and an Eagle service error and kill by Evergreen's Kaela Carnes, made it 21-19. With NU leading 24-22, Evergreen got a kill from Natalie Taylor and was aided by two straight Eagle errors to finally take the lead 25-24. Taylor then earned the win for the Geoducks with another kill for he come-from-behind set win.

Three straight Eagle kills in the second set, two by Sydney Schlect and one by Mattie Jo Johnson would give NU a commanding 17-6 lead which they would never relinquish. This time, it was two miscues by ESC at the end which would help give Northwest U the win, 25-14.

Set three would be all Eagles aided by eight early Evergreen errors which would help give NU a 15-1 lead. A Schlect kill, two straight ESC attack errors and Amanda Waterman's kill would give the Eagles the 25-7 set win and putting them up 2-1 in the match.

The final set would be tightly contested in the early going with Northwest U holding onto a 12-9 lead after another Waterman kill. The Eagles would then string together five straight points on two kills by Johnson, and kills by Sarah Warner and Sydney Schlect along with a Geoduck attack error to stretch the lead to 20-11. NU would end the set and match with Amanda Waterman's 11th kill and another attack error by ESC.

In addition to Waterman's double-double, Mattie Jo Johnson added 9 kills, hitting .389 and had an impressive career high 10 blocks, part of a team total of 18 for the night. Morgan Pilon, who hails from Olympia, had a match high 35 assists while teammate Emmaline Stockton had a match high 18 digs.

The Evergreen State College (2-8, 2-3) was led by Natalie Taylor's and Jordan Porter's 12 kills. Kelsey Delagrange added 30 assists and 12 digs for a double-double. ESC was held to a .007 team hitting percentage.

"Evergreen came out with energy and focus and you have to give them credit for their comeback in the first set," stated Steve Bain, Eagle head coach. "Our players settled down, though, and then we put pressure on them with our serve and block to take control of the match."

?The Eagles now prepare for a challenging road trip this weekend as they face No. 7 Eastern Oregon (9-1), who moved up one spot in this week's NAIA Top 25 poll and the College of Idaho. The Yotes received votes in the Top 25 voting this week.
