Eagles Open CCC Play with a Victory Over Knights

#9 Annie Shellerud scored the game winner for the Eagles today
Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Freshman Annie Shellerud scored the game winner in Northwest University's 3-2 win over Warner Pacific in the Cascade Conference opener for both teams this afternoon.

Shellerud (Spokane, Wash.) looped a shot past the Warner Pacific goal keeper after a scramble for the ball in the 61st minute. Nine minutes earlier WPC had tied the game at 2-2.

Kylie Garrison (Bellingham, Wash.) put Northwest (2-5-1, 1-0 CCC) up 1-0 at the 7:49 mark in the first half when she headed in a crossing pass from teammate Jessie Nicholl (Lakeview, Ore.). The Eagles went up 2-0 less than five minutes later when Gabriela De Andrade's (Sao Paulo, Brazil) corner kick was deflected into the goal by the Knight defense.

Warner Pacific got on the scoreboard at 21:16 when Staci Tatum scored the first of her two goals. Tatum was fouled by NU goalkeeper, Lauren Patefield, prompting a yellow card on the play and giving Tatum a penalty kick which she converted for the goal. NU would take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half, NU's Gabi De Andrade would have a shot on goal in the 48th minute which would be saved by the WPC keeper, Mariah Liebert. Staci Tatum would tie the score with her free kick from 8 yards out in the 52nd minute after an Eagle foul.

Shellerud would then put Northwest U up for good with her score at 61:48 as the Eagles would port their first CCC win of the season.

Lauren Patefield (Puyallup, Wash.) earned the win after 90 minutes in goal for Northwest U, making three saves. Mariah Liebert took the loss for Warner Pacific (1-3-2, 0-1 CCC), posting four saves. The Eagles outshot WPC 11-8 and had 7 corner kicks to the Knights' two.

"The ladies came out to play today," said Val Seid, Eagle head coach. "Warner Pacific was a tough team and they gave us some fits. We pushed the ball through and found ways to break them down to get the win."

Northwest U now travels to La Grande, Ore., for another Cascade Conference contest with Eastern Oregon on Saturday at 2 p.m
