Northwest U Opens CCC Play with a Victory

NU's Mattie Jo Johnson had 12 kills, hitting .391 for the five sets
Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Northwest University and Warner Pacific battled in a five set CCC opening night match with NU edging the Knights, 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-11, 22-25, 15-9).

The opening set was an indication of the night with 11 ties throughout with Northwest U breaking the final tie at 22-22, aided by kills by Mattie Jo Johnson and Sydney Schlect. In the second set, a service error by NU would knot the score at 20-20 and Warner Pacific would score three straight points with Janessa White getting two of her 21 kills to help give the Knights a 23-20 lead. White would then end the set with a kill to give WPC the win, 25-23.

Northwest U would catch fire in the third set breaking out to an 18-5 lead as they would close out the set, winning 25-11. A kill by Schlect, service ace by Sarah Warner and a kill by Morgan Pilon would be the final three points.

A 6-5 early lead by Northwest U in the third set would dissolve as Warner Pacific would gain momentum with an 8-3 run to lead 13-8. Down 20-15, NU would mount a come back to tie the score at 21-21, on a Mattie Jo Johnson kill, but three Eagle errors and two WPC kills would give the set to the Knights sending the match into the fifth and deciding set.

The final set would see Northwest U taking a 12-5 lead which Warner Pacific would not be able to overcome as Amanda Waterman's kill would end the set and match in the Eagles favor.

Four Northwest U (5-2, 1-0) players would finish in double figures in kills for the match: Amanda Waterman 16, Dakota Adams 14, Mattie Jo Johnson 12 (.391) and Sydney Schlect 11 (.345). Morgan Pilon would total 47 assists while Leia Roy led the team with 19 digs and Emmaline Stockton adding 12 digs. Sarah Warner chalked up 3 service aces.

Janessa White led Warner Pacific (2-2, 0-1) with 22 kills. Teammate Nicole Lisoski finished with 10 kills and Kealia Rosa had a team high 42 assists along with 14 digs. Mikaela Lisoski led the Knights with 19 defensive digs.

Northwest U will take on Multnomah University in Portland tomorrow night at 5 p.m. in another Cascade Conference match.
