Yotes Edge Eagles in Four Sets

Box Score CADLWELL, Idaho – The College of Idaho avenged a loss to the NU Eagles earlier in the season with a 3-1 (26-24, 25-16, 22-25, 26-24) victory in Caldwell tonight. Northwest U had defeated the Yotes on Sept. 17 in Kirkland.

In set one, it was the Eagles leading 23-20 after a C of I service error, but a service ace and kill by the Yotes tied the game at 23-23. In the final tie at 24-all, an error by NU and service ace by C of I's Cheyan Coburn would give the Yotes the close two point set win.

Set two would be all College of Idaho as they would take a 12-8 lead, maintain the lead throughout and go on to take a 2-0 set lead in the match.

The Eagles would come back to with a tightly contested third set, breaking a 21-21 tie to go on and close out the set with back-to-back kills by Dakota Adams and Mattie Jo Johnson.

It looked as though NU would send the match to a fifth set in set four taking a 22-19 lead on a Hannah Hanson kill, but a determined C of I team would come back to tie the match at 24-24 and win the set and match on kills by Ashley Pagan and Randi Sturtz.

Mattie Jo Johnson led Northwest U would 12 kills and hitting for a .250 percentage. Dakota Adams and Hannah Hanson added 9 kills each with Morgan Pilon finishing with a match high 42 assists and 8 digs. Leia Roy had 15 digs with Amanda Waterman contributing 13 digs for the Eagles.

The College of Idaho was led by Brenna Meehan's match high 20 kills. Ashley Pagan added 14 kills and 8 digs. Jade Folsom led the Yotes with 29 assists and Cheyan Coburn had a match high in digs with 30.

Said Steven Bain, NU head volleyball coach, "It was a hard fought match, but when the sets were on the line we were outplayed and the College of Idaho deserves credit for the victory. Even so, there were many good moments on our side of the net so we will accentuate the positive and do our best to bounce back with a great effort tomorrow."

The Eagles now head west to La Grande for another key league match-up with No. 6 ranked Eastern Oregon, a winner over Evergreen tonight.
