No. 6 EOU Comes Back to Defeat Eagles

Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. – No. 6 Eastern Oregon overcame a one set deficit to win three straight and defeat the No. 24 NU Eagles, 3-1 (26-24, 18-25, 20-25, 15-25), tonight to hand the Eagles their second straight conference loss.
 
After three ties in the first set, Northwest would take a 15-11 lead after a Mattie Jo Johnson kill and three straight EOU attack errors. Hannah Hanson and Dakota Adams would put together two straight kills as NU would continue to lead 20-16. Eastern Oregon would come back strong to tie the set at 23-23 and lead 24-23 before Amanda Waterman's kill would tie the set and her service ace would win the set, 26-24.
 
The No. 6 ranked Mountaineers would then come back strong in the second set to take a 19-14 lead. After a Hannah Hanson kill would make it 23-18, two straight EOU kills would give the set win.
 
Seven early ties would mark the third set, but EOU would take the lead for good after the score would be tied 10-10 as they would outscore the Eagles 11-8 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
Eastern Oregon would lead the entire way in the fourth and final set after taking  15-9 lead capped off by a Megan Bunn kill. NU would be unable to get any closer than 5 points the rest of the way as the Mounties would pull away for the 25-15 set and match victory.
 
Senior Hannah Hanson led Northwest U (13-6, 10-4 CCC) with 11 kills. Amanda Waterman would add 9 kills and 14 digs with Sarah Warner adding 16 digs. Morgan Pilon led the team in assists again with 34. Northwest U hit .117 as a team.
 
Eastern Oregon (21-2, 14-1 CCC) was led by Makayla Lindburg's double-double of 15 kills and 18 digs for the night. Megan Bunn and Isabelle Statkus each added 11 kills. Rachelle Chamberlain scored a match high 52 assists with Holli Mullins finishing with 21 digs for the Mounties. EOU totaled 10 blocks and hit .185 as a team.
 
Steven Bain, NU coach, said after the match, "We had a strong effort today against a top ranked team, but we simply made too many errors to even give ourselves a chance. Eastern's defense was also solid and as the match wore on we struggled to side out and that was a key factor in the outcome."
