Eagles Just Get by Knights in Five Sets

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The NU Eagles needed a 30 point fifth set to save a 3-2 (25-15, 25-23, 24-26, 20-25, 16-14) conference win over Warner Pacific College tonight. The Knights came back from a 2-0 NU lead to tie the match and sending it into the fifth and deciding set.
 
After going down 2-0 to the Eagles, the home team Knights came back strong to win a close third set, 26-24. In the fourth set, WPC broke a 9-9 tie and led the remainder of the way in the 25-20 set win to tie the match.
 
A closely contested fifth and final set would see six ties as neither team would give in. With the set tied at 14-14, Amanda Waterman would step up big with a kill and Sarah Warner would serve up an ace to lift the Eagles to the 16-14 set and match victory.
 
Northwest U's (17-7, 14-5 CCC) Hannah Hanson and Mattie Jo Johnson both finished with 13 kills with Johnson hitting .409 and Hanson hitting .370 for the five sets. Morgan Pilon had a team high 48 assists while senior Leia Roy had 20 digs. Pilon also had 14 digs for her double-double. The team totaled 10 service aces for the match.
 
For Warner Pacific (10-12, 8-11 CCC), Janessa White had a match high 20 kills with a .259 hitting percentage while teammate Janessa Mast had 19 kills with a .304 average. Kealia Rosa had a match high 55 assists with 11 digs for a double-double. Brandy Velasquez finished with a match high 28 digs.
 
Said NU head coach Steven Bain, "Tonight's match was a back and forth affair and credit goes to Warner for pushing the match to the limit. Their transition offense overwhelmed us in sets 3 and 4 but I thought our ladies were terrific and showed real grit in the 5th set when the match was on the line."
