PORTLAND, Ore. – The NU Eagles locked up third place in the CCC standings with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 25-20) hard fought victory over Multnomah University tonight.
The Lions showed improvement since the two teams met back on September 3rd in Kirkland when NU defeated MU 3-1 in the Pavilion.
In the first set, Northwest U took a 16-9 lead early and maintained the led the entire set as a kill by Amanda Waterman wrapped up the set, 25-20
Set two would see the Lions leading early 13-8 as the Eagles would come from behind to tie the set at 15-15 after kills by Hannah Hanson and Mattie Jo Johnson. NU would then outscore MU 10-6 with Hannah Hanson ending the set with her kill.
The third set would see four ties early, but Multnomah would go on a 3-0 run after a 10-10 tie to take the lead for good as they would go on to the 25-19 set win.
In the final set, the Eagles would get a fast start taking a 10-5 lead. But, the Lions still had some fight in them and they would battle back to take a 15-14 lead. A 6-1 run by NU would help them regain the lead at 20-16. They would hold on to the lead the rest of the way as Morgan Pilon would give the set and match to the Eagles with one of her four service aces.
18 kills by senior Hannah Hanson along with a hitting percentage of .567 would lead Northwest U (18-7, 15-5 CCC). Morgan Pilon would register 42 assists to go along with her 4 aces. Five Eagles finished in double figures with digs led by Sarah Warner's 17 and Leia Roy's 15.
Multnomah 11-18, 4-16 CCC) was led by Miranda Halverson's 17 kills and 13 digs. Kiana Miller had a match high 31 digs and Kayla Keane led the Lions with 37 digs.
"It was another hard fought match tonight in the CCC," commented Steven Bain, NU head coach. "Multnomah was very good tonight and played with great energy and focus. On our side of the net, I was pleased again with our effort and grit in a stressful environment and we are looking forward now to the postseason."
Northwest U opens post season play in the CCC Volleyball Championships on Tuesday, November 8 as the No. 3 seed and they will host Warner Pacific, the No. 6 seed at 7 p.m. in the Pavilion
