Eagles defeat Knights, Move on to Semifinals

Leia Roy led the Eagles with 27 digs tonight
Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest University took three out of four sets to defeat Warner Pacific College, 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 25-17) in the quarterfinals of the CCC Volleyball Championships sponsored by U.S. Bank.

It looked like it may be a repeat of the five set match played Friday night in Portland when NU would go up 2-0 and Warner Pacific would come back in the third set, but the Eagles were able to hold off a strong charge by the Knights to take the fourth set and match.

NU took a very close first set, 26-24, after the teams would battle back and forth for the advantage. With WPC leading 21-19, an Eagle timeout would give them a push as they would tie the set at 21-21 on Mattie Jo Johnson's kill. With the Knights leading 24-23 and set point, NU would come back to tie and take the 25-24 lead on an Amanda Waterman kill and service ace. An attack error by WPC would end the set.

The second set would be tied at 21-21 when a WPC error and a kill by Michal Bilger would put NU in front for good, 23-21, as Brooke Riddle would end the set with one of 10 NU service aces.

Set three would see WPC breaking out to a 16-9 lead and never looking back as they would never give up the lead. A Northwest U service error would put Warner Pacific up 24-19, and after two straight NU points, Jourdan Wenzinger would end the set with her kill.

Four straight kills in the final set would give the Eagles an 18-10 lead which NU would maintain the rest of the way as a kill by Dakota Adams, ace by Morgan Pilon and one last kill by Michal Bilger would end the set and match.

Amanda Waterman led the way for the Eagles (19-7) with 14 kills, 10 digs and a .353 hitting percentage while teammate Morgan Pilon came through with a team high 42 assists and 17 digs. Leia Roy finished with a match high 27 digs.

For Warner Pacific (11-13), Janessa Mast had a match high 21 kills and 17 digs. She hit .320 for the match. Kealia Rosa finished with a match high 47 assists with 12 digs for the Knights. Brandy Velaasquez added a team high 23 digs.

"Tonight's match was a battle from start to finish and Warner was very good at the service line, keeping us out of system much of the night," said NU coach, Steve Bain.  "On our side of the net, we too served tough and were able to respond in the 4th set to put the match away. We had a solid night offensively as well with good balance pin to pin and with our quick attack.  We are excited to extend the season and look forward to the semifinal match on Friday."

NU now moves on to the semifinals in La Grande, Ore., home of the CCC's regular season champion Eastern Oregon team.
