Eagles Edge Owls in Five Sets

Dakota Adams led NU with 13 kills.
Box Score KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The NU Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Oregon Tech in an exciting five set match, 3-2, to remain unbeaten in Cascade Conference play and improved to 6-2 for the season. OIT dropped to 0-3 in CCC play and 4-5 overall.

The Eagles opened strong getting through the first set, 25-14 as NU hit .226 while holding the Owls to an even .000. Mattie Jo Johnson led Northwest with 4 kills in the first set.

OIT came back strong, just getting by the Eagle, 26-24, in the second set to tie the match at 1-1. Kelsey Sampson and Bailey Nelson had 2 kills each for Tech but it was Mykala Rubey who led the Owls with 5 kills.

Tech carried the momentum into the third set, winning another close one, 25-22 with Sampson coming through with 5 kills to put Oregon Tech up 2-1 in the match.

NU regained its rhythm in the fourth set, holding onto the lead most way and finished off the Owls 25-23, but not before OIT would tie the set at 22-22. Hannah Hanson and Dakota Adams came through with consecutive kills to put NU ahead 24-22 and won the set on an OIT attack error.
In the 5th and deciding set, the Eagles got out quickly to an 8-3 lead and never looked back on the way to the 15-8 final set victory.

Dakota Adams led Northwest U (6-2, 3-0 CCC) with 13 kills, hitting .226 for the match while Mattie Jo Johnson had 12 kills with a .393 hitting percentage. Morgan Pilon had a big night with a team high 43 assists while adding 17 digs and 5 service aces. Leia Roy also had a big night with 33 defensive digs, a match high.

Kelsey Sampson and Mykala Rubey each had 16 kills for Oregon Tech (4-5, 0-3 CCC) with Sampson recording 20 digs and Rubey 18 for their double-doubles. Waverly Green had 44 assists and 11 digs and teammate Bella Foss had 29 digs for the Owls.

"Obviously, this was a back and forth match and Oregon Tech did a very good job of adjusting their attack in sets 2 and 3 to put pressure on our defense," said Steve Bain, Eagle head coach. "We just kept reminding the team to focus forward and play one point at a time and if we were patient the game would come back to us. It was also nice to see our depth come into play and we had solid contributions from a number of players, which was a key to winning the 4th set and forcing the 5th. Our resolve in set 5 was terrific and the ladies dialed in our serve and pass to close out the match."

This sets up the NAIA Volleyball Game of the Week tomorrow night in Ashland, when NU takes on Southern Oregon, a five set victor over the Evergreen State College tonight.
