Eagles End 12 Year Drought with Sweep of SOU

Box Score ASHLAND, Ore. – The NU Eagles broke a 12 year, 25 match drought with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) sweep of Southern Oregon late this afternoon. 2004 was the last time Northwest U defeated a Raider team. With the victory, the Eagles remain unbeaten in Cascade Conference play with a 4-0 record going into next Friday's match with No. 6 Eastern Oregon who also sports a 4-0 CCC mark.

In a match that took just one hour and five minutes, the Eagles seemed determined from the start as they bolted out to a 16-8 lead in the first set and never looked back as Hannah Hanson's kill would give NU the first set win.

Set two would be the same story as a focused NU team would take a 17-8 lead aided by another Hanson kill and it would be Hanson again with a kill to boost the lead to 18-9. Leading 24-15, SOU would score two straight points to close the gap, but Amanda Waterman would end the set with a kill.

Northwest U maintained their momentum in the final set as Mattie Jo Johnson's kill would give the Eagles a 10-5 lead. With a 23-16 lead, Hannah Hanson's kill and a service ace by Morgan Pilon would give the Eagles their first victory over Southern Oregon in a dozen years.

Northwest U (7-2, 4-0 CCC) was led by Mattie Jo Johnson and Michal Bilger's 10 kills each. Johnson hit .500 for the match and Bilger had a .318 percentage. Morgan Pilon had 35 assists while Leia Roy finished with 13 digs and Amanda Waterman had 12 digs and 6 kills. NU hit .229 as a team with 8 service aces.

Emma Gasman led Southern Oregon (5-6, 2-2 CCC) with 9 kills, Lauren McGowne led the Raiders with 23 assists and Ashlyn Flynn had 9 digs. SOU was held to .093 hitting for the match while committing 21 errors.

"We have great respect for the Southern Oregon program, so we knew it would take great execution in our serve, serve receive game to be successful," commented NU head coach, Steven Bain. "Our ability to serve tough and keep them out of system was certainly a key factor and that, coupled with our effort in serve-receive turned the match in our favor. We are mindful though that there are still many aspects of our game where we are not playing to our standards and we are anxious to get back in the gym and continue to improve."

NU will face another tough weekend series at home next weekend when they host No. 6 Eastern Oregon, winner of 11 straight matches and 31 straight sets, along with the No. 12 ranked College of Idaho Coyotes in the NU Pavilion.
