Eagles Avert Upset, Defeat Geoducks in Five Sets

Box Score OLYMPIA, Wash. – The NU Eagles battled back and forth with a determined Evergreen team with Northwest U defeating the Geoducks in five sets, 3-2 (24-26, 25-14, 20-25, 25-17, 15-13), to improve to 7-2 in conference play. Evergreen drops to 2-7 in the CCC and played without two starters in the lineup tonight.
 
The two teams would exchange set wins with Evergreen taking a close first set 26-24 marked by 10 ties. With the set tied at 24-24, Evergreen would benefit from two straight NU errors to win the set.
 
Set two would be all Eagles as they would break out to a commanding 17-7 lead and close out the set on Michal Bilger's kill.
 
Evergreen would recover in the third set to lead the entire way after taking an 11-10 lead. A Natalie Taylor kill would increase the Geoducks lead to 17-11. Evergreen leading 23-20 late in the set, two straight kills by Taylor would give Evergreen a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
The third set would turn in the Eagles favor as they would take a 15-8 lead after a service ace by Alysanne Van Dyke. The Eagles would maintain the lead the remainder of the set as Van Dyke's kill and a service ace by Morgan Pilon would tie the match at 2-2, sending it into a fifth and deciding set.
 
The fifth set would see eight ties and neither team would give ground. With the set in its final tie at 12-12, Sarah Warner and Lara Linden would come through with two straight kills to give NU the 14-12 lead. Natalie Taylor would give the Geoducks one last push with her kill to make it 14-13, but Dakota Adams would end the set and the match with her kill.
 
Northwest U (10-4, 7-2 CCC) was strong at the net with 12 blocks and served up 9 aces in the match led by Amanda Waterman with three. Freshman Michal Bilger led the team with 11 kills with Waterman scoring another double-double with 10 kills and 22 team leading digs. Morgan Pilon had a match high 46 assists and Leia Roy added 20 digs for the Eagles.
 
Natalie Taylor led Evergreen (3-12, 2-7 CCC) with an impressive 22 kill, 15 dig match. Chloee Hunt added 13 kills and 10 digs with teammate Kylie Kytan contributing a tem high 35 assists and 17 digs. The Geoducks also had 11.5 blocks for the match, but managed just a .073 hitting percentage.
 
Northwest U will travel again on Saturday when they play Walla Walla University in College Place at 8 p.m.
