Eagles End Set Drought with Victory Over Corban

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - The last time Northwest University won a set against No. 12 Corban was November 10, 2015. Tonight, that streak was broken with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-16), straight set win over the Warriors in Cascade Conference play.

Rebounding after a tough five set loss to Northwest Christian on Friday night, the Eagles wasted no time in gaining the momentum of the match as they took a 12-6 lead. Amanda Waterman would stretch the NU lead to 17-9 with her kill as the Eagles would take set one, 25-18.

The No. 12 ranked Warriors would bounce back in set two as the set would see Corban taking a 14-11 lead on Demi Winters kill. But, NU would come back to tie the set seven times not allowing Corban to pull away. With the set tied at 20-20, it would be the Eagles taking the lead for good, 24-20, with four straight points aided by three Warrior attack errors and a Mattie Jo Johnson kill. NU would win the set on another Corban miscue.

With a Corban comeback a strong possibility, the Eagles ended any threat as they quickly broke out to a 20-5 lead. But the Warriors showed why they are the No. 12 ranked team in the NAIA with seven straight points to close the gap to 20-12. After a service ace by Corban's Haley Wells, making it a 22-16 set, two kills by Keann White and a service ace by Alysanne Van Dyke would give the set and match win to NU and end the Eagles 12 set scoreless drought with the Warriors.

Keann White led Northwest U (15-6, 9-4 CCC) with 12 kills, hitting .550 for the match while teammate Morgan Pilon had a match high 25 assists. Amanda Waterman and Alysanne Van Dyke each had 12 digs for the Eagles who hit .252 for the match.

Corban (17-7, 12-3 CCC) was led by Amber Parker's 14 kills with Alaina Gentili finishing with 10 kills. Madison Milligan had a team high 19 assists and Haley Wells totaled 15 digs. The Warriors were limited to .059 hitting as a team tonight.

Said Steven Bain, NU coach after the match: "First, Corban is a championship caliber team and we knew that it would take great effort on our side of the net in order to match their technical skill and potent offense. We asked our ladies to simply be the same competitors they are in practice and they responded by playing at a high level for a sustained period. Credit our team as well for being aggressive at the service line tonight, which made their offense more predictable and allowed us to be in good spots defensively. There is still a lot of season left though and we need to have a great week of preparation as we go on the road next week for three tough matches."

Next Up: A road trip to Walla Walla University, Eastern Oregon and the College of Idaho next week.
