Corban Comes Back to Defeat Eagles in Semifinal

Box Score SALEM, Ore. – No. 1 see Corban came back from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat the NU Eagles in an exciting five set match tonight, 3-2 (25-17, 24-26, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13) to advance to the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships final. Corban will face the College of Idaho in Saturday's title match.

To start the match, it would be the Eagles down one set as they would drop a 25-17 opening set to the Warriors. Up 16-13, Corban would score five straight points to increase their lead to 21-13 after Demi Winters' kill. Amber Parker would end the set with her kill.

The Eagles wouldn't dwell on the set loss long, as they would battle Corban in a tough second set. Down early, 13-8, NU would rally to tie the set at 15-15 after kills by Keann White and Mattie Jo Johnson. The set would see eight more ties as neither team would allow a run. With the set knotted at 24-24, the Eagles would get a clutch kill by Keann White followed by a Corban attack error to give NU the set win.

Set three would be another battle between the two determined teams but NU would gain the upper hand after Corban would come back to tie the set at 20-20. The Eagles would rattle off four straight points to lead 24-20 and would win the set on a Warrior service error.

It looked as though NU might end the match in the fourth set taking a 12-8 lead after a kill by Sarah Warner. But, the 10th ranked Warriors would come back to tie the set at 16-all and would maintain a slim lead the rest of the way to win the set, 25-23, and send the match into the 5th and deciding set.

Corban would continue their hot hand and momentum into the final set breaking out to a 10-5 lead. But, the Eagles would refuse to go away easily and would slowly chip away at the Warrior lead and aided by three Corban attack errors, would pull to within two, 14-12, before a Corban timeout. Sarah Warner's kill would make it a 14-13 set, but Amber Parker would come through with a kill to end the set and the match.

Sarah Warner had an outstanding night leading NU (22-8) with 18 kills. Keann White added 10 kills and Amanda Waterman would add 9 kills and 11 digs. Morgan Pilon was solid with a match high 45 assists and 10 digs with Alysanne Van Dyke leading the team in digs with 17. NU hit .164 as a team.

Corban (23-7) was led by Amber Parker's 17 kills and 16 digs. Teammates Adrianna Aguayo and Alaina Gentili each added 12 kills each. Haley Wells had a match high 25 digs and Madison Milligan led the Warriors with 32 assists.

"Both teams played extremely hard tonight and with an effort worthy of the CCC semifinal," said Steven Bain, NU coach. "Corban is obviously a terrific team and worthy of their ranking, but our ladies deserve credit as well. We could have easily given up after that first set but we were able to stabilize serve receive and once we did that we were able to side out and stay in the match. I was extremely proud of our effort all season and while this loss is painful, it in no way diminishes the accomplishments of the seniors and all they have done for the NU volleyball program."

Next Up: The 21st ranked Eagles will await the NAIA selection show on Sunday to see if they will be awarded an at-large bid to the NAIA national tournament, the program's first since 2004.
