Eagles Earn Split on Day One in Fullerton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FULLERTON, Calif. – Northwest University opened their 2017 season with a come from behind 3-2 (23-25-17-25, 25-19, 15-21, 15-7) victory over co-tournament host, Hope International, in their first match of the Summer Slam in Fullerton today, but fell to No. 16 Cornerstone in the second, 3-0, to come away with a split.

Match 1 – NU 3, Hope International 2
After a slow start and falling behind 2-0, the Eagles won the next three sets as they pulled away for a 15-7 fifth set win and match victory.

Mattie Jo Johnson led Northwest U (1-0) with 13 kills and a .478 hitting percentage. Sophomore Keann White and senior Amanda Waterman each added 10 kills for the Eagles. Waterman added 17 digs for the double-double. Morgan Pilon finished with a team high 29 assists while teammate Alysanne Van Dyke tied for match honors with 32 digs.

Hope International (1-1) was led by Katie Landazuri's match high 15 digs while teammate Jessica Zieg had 32 assists. Shea Beeman tied NU's Van Dyke in digs with 32 for the match.

"Our ladies showed great character to bounce back from two sets down to beat a very good Hope team on their home court," said Steven Bain, NU head coach. "Another key was our depth which allowed us to make adjustments between the second and third sets to get us back in the match."

Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, Eagles 0
FULLERTON, Calif. – No. 16 Cornerstone of Michigan proved to be too much for Northwest University as the Golden Eagles from Grand Rapids defeated the Eagles in straight sets, 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-23) in the Darling Pavilion.

Starting the match over an hour late, NU fell behind early in the first set 10-5, but would come back to knot the score at 15-15 after an Audrey Saelens kill and a service ace by Tatiana Ensz. The two teams would battle back and forth until the 8th tie at 24-all when Cornerstone's Kendra Zwart would score on back-to-back kills to take set one.

Northwest U would trail in set two for a good part of the set, but trailing 17-12, the Eagles would go on a 9-4 run to tie the score at 21-21, after Alysanne Van Dyke's service ace. Keann White's kill would tie the score again at 22-22, but the Golden Eagles would score the final three points to go up 2-0 in the match.

Cornerstone would carry the momentum through to the third set leading the entire way, but not without a challenge from Northwest U. Trailing 22-13, the Eagles would pick up their game and outscore CU 8-1 to make it a 23-21 set on a service ace by Morgan Pilon. Leading 24-21, Cornerstone would commit two straight errors allowing NU to pull to within one, 24-23, before Heather Carlson's kill from the left side would end the set and the match.

Northwest U (1-1) was led by Keann White's 7 kills with teammate Tatiana Ensz finishing with 6 kills. CU's defense would limit the Eagles to hit just .134 as a team. Morgan Pilon had 17 assists while Alysanne Van Dyke led the team with 15 digs.

Kendra Zwart led Cornerstone (2-0) with 17 kills while hitting .81 for the match. Hope Leppink took match honors in assists with 37 while Mackenzie Vallad had a team high 13 digs for the Golden Eagles. CU hit .223 as a team.

Said Coach Bain, "Cornerstone was a very good team with a lot of offensive weapons and we simply didn't do enough in the serve-pass game to enable us to win this match. Our five set match earlier against Hope wasn't a factor because we controlled sets 1 and 2 and just couldn't close the deal. But, that's part of the process and I like the physical effort and emotional energy these Eagles bring to the court."

Northwest U resumes tournament play tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m. match against co-host Vanguard on the Lions' home court in Costa Mesa.
