No. 5 Corban Ends Eagles Late Comeback Bid

No. 5 Max Schellmann with the collision and header
Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – A late goal by the NU Eagles would not be enough as No. 5 Corban University defeated the Eagles, 2-1, in Cascade Collegiate Conference play this afternoon on the NU Athletic Field.

Nathaniel Cheney scored what would be the game winner in the 83rd minute as he beat the NU keeper, Daniel Christenson, who fell on the play and Cheney finished from 3 yards out into an empty net.

NU's Jake Morse made it interesting at the 84:54 mark as he would score off teammate Obi Esonu's header, but it wouldn't be enough as the Warriors improved to 6-0-1 overall and 2-0 in CCC play. NU drops to 3-3 and 1-1 in the conference.

It was Corban's Armando Lopez putting Corban into the lead at 42:07 of the first half as he took teammate's Jesse Martin's pass from the right side and scored from 8 yards out on the right side of the goal.

The defenses would then take over as the two teams would battle back and forth until Cheney's goal at the 82:31 mark would be the difference in the game.

Northwest U (3-3, 1-1 CCC) outshot the 5th ranked Warriors16-11 with Jack MacDonald and Branson Corwin each taking three shots. NU keeper, Daniel Christenson, made three saves in goal for the Eagles.

Corban goalkeeper, Jordan Farr, earn the victory in goal for the Warriors (6-0-1, 2-0 CCC) with 4 saves for the game.

Said NU coach, Gary McIntosh after the game, "This was a great game to watch as both teams played some exciting soccer today. We're disappointed in the result for sure but not with the way we played. I'm pleased with our effort and decisions today. We will get back to work on Monday in preparation for next week's games."

Next Up: The Eagles hit the road to La Grande, Ore., on Sept. 22 to play Eastern Oregon and then make the long drive to Portland to take on Warner Pacific on Sept. 23.
