Eagles Down Pesky Geoducks

Box Score OLYMPIA, Wash. – Evergreen State gave the Eagles a battle tonight, but Northwest U would emerge on top with a 3-1 (25-11, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23) Cascade Conference victory to improve to 8-2 for the season, 2-0 in conference play.
 
Playing their third match in as many days, the Eagles would hold the Geoducks to -.051 hitting in the first set as they would post a 25-11 first set win.  Leading 16-9, NU would score 7 straight points to lead on back-to-back kills by Mattie Jo Johnson, 23-9, before Sarah Warner would end it with her kill.
 
Evergreen would rebound in the second set to take a 17-9 lead on a 6-0 scoring run capped off by Megan Breckenridge's kill. NU would pull to within 5 at 24-19, but a Geoduck score would end the set in their favor.
 
It would be the Eagles bouncing back in the third set to lead 13-8 after an ESC attack error. Evergreen would creep back into the set closing the score to 20-18 after two straight NU miscues, but a kill by Amanda Waterman and attack error by the Geoducks would end the set in favor of the Eagles, 25-20.
 
In set four, it looked as though the Eagles would take own the Geoducks easily leading 17-12, but Evergreen State would battle hard to tie the set at 18-18 on consecutive kills by Breckenridge. With NU leading 23-21, another Breckenridge kill and error by NU would tie the score once again at 23-23, but Keann White's kill and another attack error by ESC would end the set and the match.
 
Amanda Waterman and Sarah Warner led the Eagles (8-2, 2-0 CCC) with 9 kills. Mattie Jo Johnson added 8 kills and Morgan Pilon would finish with 19 assists. Alysanne Van Dyke had a match high 26 digs with Sydney Schlect adding 17 and Sarah Warner completing the double-double with 15 digs.
 
The Evergreen State (4-5, 1-1 CCC) was led by Natalie Taylor who had 17 kills and 11 digs. Megan Breckenridge added 13 kills and 24 digs and Matalasi Laban totaling 37 assists for a match high. Tori Wegdahl added 23 digs.
 
"We faced a determined Evergreen squad tonight and it was a battle from start to finish," said Steven Bain, NU head coach. "I was pleased though with our effort overall, especially our younger players. We displayed good composure down the stretch as well and we're able to make plays at key moments to seal the win. We can now look forward to getting back in the gym on Monday and a solid week of preparation."
 
Next up: Northwest U will be on the road next weekend for a big match with Corban in Salem, Ore., and Northwest Christian in Eugene.
