Eagles Escape from the Lions’ Den with 3-2 Win

Written by: Clayton Hashley

Portland, Ore. – Northwest University (9-9, 5-4 CCC) bested the Multnomah Lions (3-14, 1-8 CCC) in five sets. They recovered from a loss in the first set to win three of the next four to pull out the victory. This was the Eagles' fourth consecutive conference win.

After dropping two of the first three sets (20-25, 27-25, 19-25), the Eagles finally found their stride against Multnomah, winning the fourth and fifth sets 25-18 and 15-7, respectively. The fourth set found the Eagles jumping out to an early 13-6 lead and never looking back.  A 9-1 run in the fifth set propelled them to their ultimate victory.

Northwest's Sarah Warner had a great game across the board with 10 kills and 17 digs.  Courteney Carr and Keann White had impressive outings as well, with White racking up 12 kills and Carr setting up her team well with 34 assists.

An impressive showing from Multnomah's Marissa Rhodes (51 assists) was not enough against the Eagles, who have been on a roll as of late, winning their last four conference games.

Northwest head coach Steve Bain commented, "We have seen Multnomah play on multiple occasions, and we knew they were much better than their record.  They were terrific on defense, which frustrated our attackers, and they kept us off balance with their out-of-system attacks.  Credit our ladies, though, for digging in and refusing to give up.  It took a team effort to turn the match around in that fourth set, and we played a clean fifth set to close out the match.  We have another tough match at Warner Pacific tomorrow, which will take another all-out effort to be successful."
